What are network extras, or access charges?

Now referred to as 'your phone companies access charge', or just 'access charge' but formally referred to as 'network extras', these are additional costs charged by your phone company to access certain services, usually by dialing a premium rate number.

When dialing from a land line, this is usually, but not always a fixed one off charge to access the service, then the per minute charges apply as advertised. Some telephone suppliers charge an additional per minute fee on top of the charge that is advertised.
